World of Warcraft

In April 2004, The9 City signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Blizzard Entertainment, becoming the exclusive operator of “World of Warcraft” in mainland China, and officially entered commercial operation on June 6 of the same year. Through the efforts of The9 City’s “World of Warcraft” operation team, “World of Warcraft” took root and flourished in China. For four years, The9 City’s operational status has been unable to gain player recognition, especially with frequent server quality issues, evolving from the original three and seven server crashes to frequent crashes across all servers, with high latency, causing many players to abandon the Chinese server for the Taiwanese server.

The9 City only announced the real-time status of the servers on its official forum, while the status on the homepage often did not match the actual situation, and the forum moderators did not provide reasonable explanations for server issues, mainly deleting players' abusive comments. The response speed of GMs in the game is slow, generally taking four to five hours after players seek help for a GM to respond. However, regarding the rampant cheating issues in mainland China's online games, The9 City has made considerable efforts to seek improvement and has achieved some results. The cheating situation in World of Warcraft is lighter than in most mainland online games.

On April 16, 2009, Blizzard Entertainment announced that it would transfer the agency operation rights of the online game “World of Warcraft” in the Chinese mainland market from The9 City to NetEase. However, after April 16, The9 City, disregarding that it had already lost the agency and that the servers were overloaded, still opened multiple new servers, completely ignoring player interests, and was condemned by a large number of players. The related rumors that emerged earlier caused The9 City's stock price to plummet, and some analysts believe the company may be in operational difficulties.

On June 6, 2009, The9 City officially ended its agency for “World of Warcraft” in mainland China.

After April 16, 2009, in order to prevent its competitor NetEase from poaching its “World of Warcraft” customer service staff, its CEO Chen Xiaowei promised that The9 City would never lay off employees and would go through difficulties together with them. However, shortly after June 6, The9 City took large-scale layoff measures and signed non-compete agreements with employees to prevent them from joining other game operators. This incident sparked a heated discussion within The9 City and on the internet, with people generally commenting that this was a manifestation of The9 City’s irresponsibility, once again showing that it is a company without sense of responsibility and indifferent to the interests of others.
